In this article, we shall be discussing the ui cut off mark for 2020/2021 academic session; this release was recently made known to the public by the management of the University,
I know you would like to ask question like; What does cut off mark means?
Now, I will explain this in a simplest way ever that you can understand;
‘Cut off mark simply means the minimum mark that is expected of an admission seeking-candidate to score before he/she could be eligible for admission into the University/any other higher institution of learning. Second definition; it is a fixed mark determined by the management board of a University/any other higher institution of learning as a basic for admitting students into the department of study, in which any candidate seeking for admission into such tertiary institution must not score below. Any candidate who scores below such mark will not be offered admission. Therefore, it is advisable that any student seeking admission should perform well enough in order to meet up with the school requirement; even preferably to beat the required score in order to improve his/her chances of securing admission into the department their choice.
Now, I am sure you have clearly understood what cut off mark actually means, but despite this explanation, NAIJA SCHOOL ADMISSION is still interested in giving you good example of it, now lets go;
I shall be sighting two good examples from the perspective of JAMB ( Joint admission and matriculation Board) and Departmental cutoff points.
Example of UI JAMB (Joint Admission and Matriculation Board) Cutoff
If the University of Ibadan management says its minimum JAMB(Joint admission and Matriculation Board) requirement to study medicine & Surgery in University of Ibadan is 320 and a candidate scored 300, which is obviously lower to the University’s requirement, such a candidate will not be considered for admission because he/she scored lower than the school actually required, but if the candidate scored 320 and above in Jamb (JOINT ADMISSION AND MATRICULATION BOARD), such candidate will be considered for admission. Now that I have explained what cutoff mark means in jamb, let’s move on to cutoff mark in the department.
Example for Departmental cut off- If the University of Ibadan management says the minimum aggregate point/mark an admission seeking-candidate must make before he/she could be admitted into Medicine & Surgery department is 75, and a candidate scored 74 or less in the departmental aggregate mark, such a candidate will not be admitted into the department, but if a candidate scored 75 points and above, such a candidate is eligible for admission and will be admitted to Medicine & Surgery Department because he/she met the departmental requirement.
Though, in one of the recent 2019 news about education and admission-seeking candidates in Nigeria, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced that students who scored at least 160 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which has a maximum score of 400, are eligible for admission into the public universities in the country. But despite this information, there are several universities in Nigeria who set there JAMB minimum score requirement at 200 and above. Among these Universities is UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN.
The University of Ibadan popularly known as UI is rated as the best University in Nigeria due to the quality of education they impact into their students and the contribution of the schools’ products (ALUMNI) in the labor market both in Nigeria and around the globe which consequently leads to competition in the pursuit of admission into the University every year.
I scored less than 200 in my JAMB exam, am I qualified for admission into UI?
No, you are not, because UI does not admit any student who scored less than 200 in the UTME for admission.
I scored 200 in my JAMB Exam, will I be automatically offered admission into UI?
Well, having scored 200 in JAMB indicates your chances of being offered admission based on the admission requirement of the University, but it does not automatically guarantee that you will be offered admission, the reason for this response is because, according to several experiences about the process of offering admission to students into UI, preferences are usually given to students who have scored above 200 in their UTME before considerations are given to those who scored exactly 200, this is not to scare you but to let you know that this usually occur due to competitiveness in the admission processes by the admission-seeking candidates.
Therefore, it is best you score above 200 in your UTME in order to improve your chances of securing admission into the University. Also note that there is what we call ‘Aggregate Score’ which used to determine your departmental cut-off point, and its calculated like this; AGGREGATE SCORE= (JAMB SCORE)/8) + (POST JAMB SCORE/2) i.e. if your jamb score is 200 and post utme score is 50, then your aggregate score will be 50.
